Your kitchen, your data
Last updated: 4 October 2026
Irio is a Kenyan cooking app that suggests recipes from what you have at home. This policy explains what information the Irio app collects, why, where it goes, and how you can delete it. It applies to the Irio Android app and the Irio web app.
The short version: your pantry, favourites, cooking history and meal plans stay on your phone. We store your account (name and email) so you can sign in. We have no ads, no analytics trackers, and we never sell your data.
What stays on your device
The things you do in Irio every day are stored only on your phone (or in your browser, on the web app) and are not sent to us:
- Your pantry (the ingredients you have)
- Favourite recipes and recipes you saved
- Your cooking history and streak
- Meal plans and shopping lists
- Your preferences: diet, allergies, household size, cuisine and layout
Recipe matching runs on your device, so searching for recipes does not send your ingredients anywhere. If a different account signs in on the same phone, the previous account's on-device data is cleared.
What we collect
Your account. When you sign up we store your name, email address and password. Passwords are stored securely hashed by our authentication provider; we never see them. We use your email only to let you sign in, confirm your account and reset your password.
Feedback you send. If you use "Send feedback", we store your message, the category you chose, your optional rating, the app version and your device type (for example Android). Your email is attached only if you tick "You can email me about this".
The AI chef (optional). When nothing in our recipe catalogue matches, or when you ask for a custom AI recipe, the app sends the names of the ingredients you selected, your diet and allergy settings, your household size and cuisine preference to our server, which asks an AI model through OpenRouter to write a recipe. We do not send your name or email to the AI provider. To prevent abuse we keep a record of which account made an AI request and when; these records are deleted automatically after 30 days.
Who processes your data
- Supabase hosts our accounts database, feedback and server functions.
- OpenRouter and the AI model provider it routes to generate AI recipes, only when you use the AI chef, and only from the information listed above.
We do not sell, rent or share your personal information with advertisers or data brokers.
Delete your account
You can delete your account at any time:
- In the app: go to Me → Delete my account. This permanently deletes your account, your feedback and your AI request records from our servers, and clears all Irio data on that device.
- Without the app: email us at mbuguam323@gmail.com from the address you signed up with, with the subject "Delete my Irio account". We will delete your account and associated data within 30 days and confirm by email.
On-device data can also be removed at any time by uninstalling the app or clearing its storage.
Age and alcohol
Irio is not directed at children under 13. Some drink recipes contain alcohol; these are marked 18+ and are intended for adults of legal drinking age. You can hide them in your preferences ("No alcohol").
Recipes and nutrition
Recipe nutrition values are estimates and have not been reviewed by a dietitian. Always check ingredients against your own allergies; allergen filters depend on the information in our recipe catalogue.
Security
Data sent between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Our database only allows each user to add their own feedback; nobody can read other people's data through the app.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and tell you in the app for significant changes.
